RULES:

1) No photoshopping of entries, however cropping, and adjustment of brightness/contrast is allowed.

2) You must have a photo of a tree in nature you wish to mimic, then search for nursery stock from a non-bonsai nursery to use to mimic your photograph of nature. You may also use seedlings you grew yourself, rescued garden plants, and collected materials so long as no work has been done to them with the exception of a repotting. Do not collect the tree you are intending on mimicing!

3) Three entries per person allowed.

4) Multiple trees per entry allowed up to 5 trees maximum in a planting. Accent plants allowed. (This means penjing, raft plantings, and small forest plantings are allowed.)

5) Trees in final project can be any size: mame/shohin, or a larger bonsai size.

6) If your tree in nature has deadwood features then you need to include those in your final tree submission. (this means, jin, shari, tanuki are all allowed. Carve to your heart's content!)

7) You may use pictures posted on the internet or taken by someone you know so long as the original author of the photo is given credit in your submission. Anyone caught with copyright infringement or commiting plagiarism will have their entries removed and be disqualified. Otherwise we encourage you to go out and take a photo to use yourself.

8) You may use a tree that is a different species than the tree in the photograph so long as you use a conifer to represent another conifer, or a deciduous tree to represent another deciduous tree.

9) Since Nature doesn't follow any specific rules of nebari and taper, the typical rules of bonsai do not apply.

Start date of August 1st 2008
End date of August 31st 2009

That's 13 months folks so that everyone in any hemisphere can enter.

Deadline for Initial picture submission of the tree you wish to mimic: December 31st, 2008
Deadline for submission of initial tree material you are using: May 31st, 2009

Winners will be decided by forum vote.

Prizes: Vic of Erin Pottery has graciously agreed to supply prizes once more for our competitions.

Alternative prizes: Joe, Dan and I will also be giving out certificates to the three entrants that we feel meet the following qualifications: The most like the photo, the most natural looking, and the most unusual.

Since we are also acting as judges, Joe, Dan and I will not be participating in this contest. We shall also act as the tiebreakers and will break any tie that arises.

***These rules are subject to change***

This thread is for the posting of your photos, links to photos and your stock only. All other postings will be removed.

Note: Nature means tree(s) that grew on their own in the wild, photos of trees from a man-made garden are not considered eligible for this contest.

As of 8/22/2008, any tree that occupies a grey area will no longer be approved. This has been established to clear up any further questions, concerns and confusions by those entering the contest. If you're tree is in a grey area, seek out a different specimen online or in nature.

Ok, here's what will probably be my only entry. I hope three photos are allowed - the first is to show the pair together, the other two are closer views of each tree so the branch structure is clearer.
**EDIT** : for clarification, I wish to be judged on the first picture; the pair of trees as a whole, and how accurately I manage to capture their relationship to each other. The additional photos of each tree are for the benefit of anyone who wishes to see the branch structure better.

EDIT 11/08/08

Here is the picture of the trees I bought to work on; two Cupressus macrocarpa from Duchy nursery, a non-bonsai nursery. Total cost of both trees was £11 / ~$21. No work has been done to these trees, they are pictured as they were bought.

Well here's my first tree to copy, a huge Oak with dead branches about 45 miles from me. I'm doing it from an "inspired by" point of view rather than "branch by branch"! smile.gif

And the material, some frost-bitten exotic plant nursery out-the-back-and-sick rescues (New Zealand Christmas Tree - Metrosideros Excelsa)! They were cheap but the downside is they haven't finished dying yet, in fact one of them has totally wilted and probably won't make it. I'll try and save the other three and see which is the healthiest to train by the May 31 '09 deadline.

This is the illest one! sad.gif

My 2nd inspirational tree, a huge Yew about 7 miles from me that's supposed to be well over 1,000 years old! Again this will be "inspired by" rather than branch-by-branch.

Primary photo.

Additional shot of the "side" of the trunk.

Additional overall shot of the "side".

No material as yet, but the plan is to do a Tanuki!

this photo was taken by me

I decided that the far view of this tree is relevant to the final image I'm planning to impose on the stock so, I've decided to add another Giant photo to this thread. Happy prunings. (This photo was taken at a slightly different angle)

Here is the nursery stock its a yew

What the hell, I'll give it a go and I'll try to mimic the good ol' curtain fig in Tropical North Queensland, photo by me!

I'll have to go and buy another tree I guess!

I've got myself organised and taken an image of an Australian native Black Cypress that is growing in the paddock 500 m north of our house. This young tree is part of a group of remnant vegetation that was left in a rocky area when the paddock was cleared.

I have a few native Black Cypresses growing in pots that I was planning to grow on to plant near the house. The tree that I will use is one of the more unusual "blue" sports that can sometimes be found. The seedling has only been moved up in pot size as it grew (it was intended to be planted out in the paddock) and has had no work done on it.
